Austria

Around 32,000 growers, mostly part-time farmers, produce grapes from around fifteen growing regions. The climate is typically continental with harsh winters and hot dry summers and the wines are typically rich and powerful with a pronounced acidity.

Gruner Veltliner, the grape of Austria, accounts for around 36% of the total vineyard area and the resulting wines develops similar to Chardonnay. With this in mind, internationally renowned critics organised a blind tasting against top Burgundy and Californian Chardonnay. Austrian wines obtained seven out of ten top spots. The result gave Austria's top growth whites the credit that was long overdue. The good news is that most of the wines still cost a fraction of their illustrious competition.
